These fact sheets provides seafood producers, processors and retailers with the most up to date analysis of the nutritional value of Australian seafood. The information in this fact sheet is based on comprehensive laboratory testing conducted on fresh Australian seafood during 2011. This new information can be used to support marketing claims based on nutrition and to prepare nutrition information panels required on seafood products. Because the information has been rigorously checked, is based on Australian seafood, and includes species not previously analysed, it has been accepted by the food standards regulatory body.

All downloadable resources are available in formats that can be used unchanged (jpg) or in a form your graphic designer or marketing team can utilise and adapt (eps). As eps files are very large, please contact emily.mantilla@seafoodcrc.com to obtain a copy.

When using Super Seafood, It is very important and it is highly recommended that you take into consideration the format of your own products (raw, cooked, smoked etc.) and consult the FSANZ Nutrition Information User Guide available at foodstandards.gov.au

It is also very important that you note that for some species, a health claim on a particular nutrient was not made (e.g. oysters are a source of zinc). From all the seafood samples used in this research, an average (mean) and standard deviation was produced.

To ensure a conservative approach to making nutrient claims, percentages used to calculate the nutrient claims were not derived from the aforementioned mean, but the mean minus two standard deviations.

For example, if the original mean was 50g protein and the standard deviation was 5, the lower and upper bound values would be 40g and 60g respectively. Thus, the lower bound value of 40g protein was used to assess the ability to make a claim and was expressed as a percentage of the nutrient’s claim amount. This conservative approach was discussed with and agreed by FSANZ that this was a suitable strategy.  This means you can be very confident in making any health claims from the Super Seafood Industry Kit.
